Sighting: Lake Cote, Costa Rica

On September 4, 1971, during an aerial survey for a hydroelectric project near Costa Rica’s Arenal Volcano, a high-resolution camera aboard an Aero Commander plane captured a striking image of a metallic, disc-shaped object hovering over Lake Cote. The photo, taken at 8:25 AM (frame #300), remained unnoticed until later analysis revealed the anomaly. Estimated at 120–220 feet in diameter, the object sparked immediate intrigue, though authorities initially suppressed discussion.

Decades later, the image resurfaced in public discourse, notably in a 2021 New Yorker article. Recently, a high-resolution drum scan of the original negative—acquired by Costa Rican citizen Esteban Carranza from his late uncle (a former National Geographic Institute technician)—was produced using a Tango Drum Scanner, yielding an unprecedented 1.7GB file. This scan, free of decades-old scratches, offers new clarity for analysis.

Key Points:
  • Historical Context: The image, never conclusively debunked despite claims of lens flares or mundane objects, is regarded as one of the clearest UAP photographs.
  • Renewed Interest: Experts like Luis Elizondo (former AATIP head) and Jeremy Corbell (filmmaker) emphasize its significance, linking it to modern pilot reports of advanced aerial phenomena.
  • Expert Opinions: Analysts highlight similarities to historical sightings (e.g., Australia’s 1966 Westall incident) and stress the need for crowdsourced, scientific scrutiny.
  • Call for Transparency: Advocates urge public engagement and government openness, viewing such evidence as critical to understanding UAPs.
